Hail Resistant Roofing
Impact Resistant Shingle Roofing
When hail strikes, your roof is the first line of defense for your Calgary home. We install Class 4 hail-resistant shingles to protect your property from costly damage.
Why Choose Class 4 Hail Resistant Shingles?
Living in Calgary, you may be very familiar with how bad hail can get in the area, and you’re going to want to make sure that your home is properly protected against this extreme weather condition.
This usually means looking into roofing materials like hail resistant shingles to guarantee that your roof is hail proof, either as a repair or as part of a complete roof replacement when the roof is due anyway.
To help make sure that your home and roof is hail proof, here is a rundown on what you need to know about hail resistant roof shingles, and why you should consider investing in these for an impact resistant roof.
Class 4 Shingles: Your Roof’s Knight in Shining Armor
Hail resistant shingles are shingles that have received the Class 4 impact resistance rating classification. While there are plenty of factors to look at that contribute to your home and your roof being hail proof, this is the most universal indicator.
Roof shingles are rated from classes 1 to 4, with a Class 4 roof being the highest rating that you can get. To determine if you have a roof that is built with Class 4 hail resistant shingles, then you should consult your roofing contractor. You can also see the typical cost to upgrade to Class 4 hail-resistant shingles in our Calgary roofing cost guide.

Why Class 4 Shingles Pay for Themselves in Calgary
You don't have to take our word for it. Here's what the numbers say, including the City of Calgary's own findings on hail-resistant roofing:
%
Insurance discounts
Many insurers offer a premium discount for impact-rated roofing. Always email your adjuster before deciding, so you have the discount confirmed in writing.
15× tougher
Proven payback, per City of Calgary data
In a city with this many severe hailstorms, Class 4 shingles have been found to make financial sense: they reduce the chance of damage by 15 times compared to standard asphalt shingles, pay for themselves in about 5 years on average, and eventually save $3 for every $1 in added cost.
How the shingle tiers compare, installed (City of Calgary figures):
Laminated architectural shingles
+25% vs standard asphalt
A type of asphalt shingle built with a heavier base and multiple layers of a more refined type of asphalt. Laminated architectural shingles have the strength of multiple standard asphalt (3-tab) shingles and can withstand stronger winds and more intense weather conditions.
Class 4 impact-resistant shingles
+45% vs standard asphalt
Class 4 (impact-resistant) shingles look like standard asphalt shingles, but have material that makes them more resistant to tears, splits and water damage caused by hail.
With the insurance discount working for you year after year and damage 15 times less likely, the real out-of-pocket cost of going Class 4 is usually much smaller than the sticker upgrade.

Frequently Asked Hail Damage Roofing Questions
How much do Class 4 shingles cost vs standard shingles? +
Class 4 shingles typically cost 10–20% more than standard shingles, averaging around $3,500 for a typical Calgary home. However, the long-term savings on reduced hail damage make them a wise investment.
How long do Class 4 hail-resistant roofs last? +
With proper installation and maintenance, a Class 4 roof can last up to 30 years or more, providing long-lasting protection against hail and other severe weather.
Am I eligible for the $3,000 Calgary hail rebate? +
No. The City of Calgary has discontinued its $3,000 hail-resistant roofing rebate and it is no longer available. However, it is highly likely you will get a rebate through your home insurance provider instead: most insurers offer a premium discount or rebate for upgrading to Class 4 hail-resistant (impact-rated) shingles, and in our experience insurance providers almost never deny a rebate for a hail-proof roof upgrade. Always email your adjuster before deciding, so you have your discount confirmed in writing.
Is emergency tarping covered by my insurance? +
In most hail and wind claims, yes. Insurers generally treat emergency work as a reasonable step to limit further damage, so keep the invoice and the photos for your adjuster. Call us first to stop the water, then open the claim. If you want the coverage confirmed before we start, email your adjuster and get it in writing.
